Leading up to SIHH 2015, watch blogs are afire with Pre-SIHH 2015 announcements. Of all the Pre-SIHH 2015 announcements, I find Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum to be one of the most intriguing since I have special place in my watch heart for GMT, timerzoner, and worldtime complications.
At 5,800 CHF for a steel/leather version, Montblanc just threw its hat into the most hotly contested segment in mechanical watch, the $5000-10,000 USD price range.
Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum is an homage to MontblancMeisterstück Fountain Pen’s 90th anniversary. The worldtime complication is developed in-house by Montblanc master watchmakers. However, we do not know at this point if the entire movement is in-house or just the worldtime module. I suspect that the movement is a modified ébauche with in-house worldtime module. I hope Montblanc will surprise me and prove me wrong on this.
We’ll keep a close watch (pun intended) on this piece. The Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum could give NOMOS Zurich Worldtimer a stiff competition. We will know for sure once we have a chance to get some wrist-time with it.
