With SIHH 2016 fast approaches, you start to see deluges of “Pre SIHH 2016” announcements throughout blogosphere. Latest words from IWC is their Big Pilot. And we mean BIG as in 48mm and larger. Not for me and I won’t waste the space talking about it.
Instead, the variation of the IWC Pilot which captivates me most is the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince” (Ref. IW502701). There are only a handful of artists whose whimsical drawing and storytelling style transcend generations and still resonates with current generation as it did mine.
There’s Hergé’s The Adventure of Tin Tin. There’s Charles Schulz’s Peanuts. And there’s Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Le Petit Prince. As an individual, Saint-Exupéry is arguably the most intriguing for me with him being modern day Renaissance man; an artist and an adventurer/pilot.
While I’m not a big fan of celebrity watch brand ambassador, I think IWC have done consistently wonderful job with their Saint-Exupéry editions. The latest edition for the SIHH 2016, the Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince”, is one of IWC’s best yet.
IWC’s special edition watches tend to be closed caseback with commemorative engraving. In a surprising turn, the Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince” has display caseback. I’m a huge fan of decorated rotor and the solid gold rotor for this watch is crafted to show the famous whimsical image of the Little Prince standing on his tiny asteroid observing the heavens.
The other winning touch is the Santoni strap. Its rich quality calfskin strap with cream-colored ornamental seams pay homage to Saint-Exupéry’s flying suit with base colour matching the tobacco brown dial. To my grail list you go.
